Diagnosis and treatment for musculoskeletal conditions Regardless of age or ability
Pain I Movement I Function
Dr Sheridan offers expert diagnostic and non-surgical treatments for a wide range of musculoskeletal and sporting injuries, drawing on years of experience working with military, amateur and elite sporting populations.
The word ‘sport’ may lead you to think that a sports doctor only treats athletes! However, sports physicians have expertise throughout the field of musculoskeletal medicine and the management of conditions affecting muscles, tendons, bones and joints, whether sport-related or not!
In the UK, a sports physician is a medical doctor who specialises in the field of sports and exercise medicine. They are trained to diagnose, treat, and reduce the risk of injuries related to sports and exercise as well as from general overuse or 'wear and tear'.
Their experience of working with patients from a wide array of sporting activities is particularly helpful in understanding the specific demands, requirements or injury risks attached to each sport. A sport and exercise medicine consultant can provide novel effective non-surgical treatments across a spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions. With access to a strong and experienced network of health professionals, they will also ensure that you are connected with the most appropriate and specialised rehabilitation therapists to guide your recovery.
Every patient is different and Dr Sheridan will always ensure you are given the time and attention you need in order to accurately diagnose and effectively treat your injury and symptoms. A typical treatment plan however will follow the timeline below with the advantage that point of care ultrasound diagnostics and ultrasound-guided-injections can be performed within your clinic appointment if required. This avoids the need for onward referral to another clinician and service.
Book Appointment
Depending on the clinic location, appointments can be made directly with the clinic or via Dr Sheridan's secretary.
First consultation
A typical first consultation involves a thorough clinical assessment including, where indicated, a diagnostic MSK ultrasound scan*. Arrangements may be made for further investigations such as X-ray / MRI scan / blood tests. *Additional fee's for ultrasound are applicable (see fee schedule)
Follow-up
At your follow-up appointment the results of any tests will be discussed alongside recommendations for treatment such as physical therapy, injections or referral to another specialist such as an orthopaedic surgeon or rheumatologist.
Treatment
If an ultrasound-guided-injection is recommended, this will generally be performed by Dr Sheridan at a subsequent appointment to give you time to consider the information you have been provided and to obtain authorisation from your insurance provider. On occasion it may be possible to arrange such injections at the first follow-up appointment for clinical or logistical reasons.
Follow-up
The timing of this appointment will depend on your specific diagnosis and the treatment undertaken. On average this will be 4-6 weeks following an injection, and 6-12 weeks for exercise rehabilitation
