A new type of treatment for knee osteoarthritis that offers patients an effective alternative to current therapies

Arthrosamid®

Synovial pain is a common symptom experienced by patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). This is caused by inflammation of synovial tissue, which lines the inside of the knee joint, and is strongly linked with the level of pain experienced by patients with knee OA. Arthrosamid® is an injectable treatment that permanently combines with the knee’s synovial tissue, reducing inflammation, decreasing joint stiffness, improving pain, function and overall quality of life.

Arthrosamid® is a new type of treatment for knee osteoarthritis. It offers an effective alternative to other treatments like steroid injections or knee replacement surgery. Based on an innovative non-biodegradable hydrogel technology, Arthrosamid® is 97.5% water with 2.5% being a cross linked polyacrylamide backbone. When injected into the knee, Arthrosamid® binds to the joint lining, which is frequently the source of pain in arthritis. In many patients it provides sustained pain relief without the need for repeated injections.
Arthrosamid® is an intra-articular polyacrylamide hydrogel injection (iPAAG) for the symptomatic treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Once injected into your knee joint cavity, it restores the consistency of your synovial fluid, the lubricating fluid in your knee, improving lubrication and cushioning of the joint. Arthrosamid® also integrates into the synovium or lining of your inner joint capsule creating a cushion-like effect and blocks the inflammation pathways that can cause knee pain.
Arthrosamid® is a simple out-patient procedure that means you can go home the same day.

It is safe for intended use and is biocompatible which allows it to integrate with the knee's joint lining. The overall safety profile of the hydrogel has undergone over two decades of research and development with approximately 1,000,000 hydrogel units used for various indications in the body.
In clinical trials, patients reported a reduction in their pain levels by Week 4 after their injection. The reduction in pain was sustained at 3 years. Arthrosamid® trials continue to follow patients for 5 years.
Clinical trials reported no serious side effects following treatment with Arthrosamid®. The most commonly reported side effects were joint discomfort and a sensation of joint swelling, which were mostly mild in severity and lasting a few days to weeks.
The overall safety profile of the injectable hydrogel has been established over the last 20 years with its use for various indications in the body.
When will the treatment start to work?
Patients can see the benefits around 4 weeks after treatment. However, effects may take 3-4 months to be fully felt
Is Arthrosamid® safe?
Arthrosamid® is safe for intended use and is biocompatible which allows it to integrate with the tissues in your knee. The overall safety profile of the hydrogel has undergone over two decades of research and development with approximately 1,000,000 hydrogel units used for various indications in the body.
Will I be able to be active as usual after my treatment?
It is recommended that you reduce your activity level for the first 2 days after treatment. Then for about 2 weeks after you should limit to normal activities of daily living.
How long can I expect the benefits to last?
In a prospective study comparing Arthrosamid® to Hyaluronic Acid the reduction in pain has been shown to last 3 years.
Who can be treated with Arthrosamid®?
Based on studies to date, patients who are less that 70 years old with mild or moderate arthritis in their knee are likely to have the best response to treatment. It can still be effective in older patients and those with more severe arthritis, but results become less predicable with increasing age and severity.

How is an Arthrosamid® injection performed?

The injection is performed in the outpatient clinic under ultrasound-guidance to ensure accurate needle placement. It does not need to be performed in an operating theatre and takes around 20-30minutes
