Common Causes of Knee Pain

Knee pain may be associated with sudden injury, such as following a twist and fall on the ski slope; or develop gradually over time with no clear mechanism of injury. It may occur on the background of a grumbly achey knee that suddenly flares; or it may arise all of a sudden and without warning. Often the diagnosis is clear from the patient's history but careful clinical examination can provide further important insights into the cause. It may be necessary to perform further tests. such as X-ray, Ultrasound scan or MRI if the diagnosis is unclear or simply to confirm clinical suspicions and so allow effective treatment to be commenced.
